6 design Tips for How to Hang Your Art for a Show

September 5, 2022

When it comes to hanging your art at an art show, it is essential to keep it as simple as possible. This is regardless of what your artistic vision, preferred subject matter or style is.

There is an assumption that displaying more artwork increases your chances of selling, but the opposite is also true. It is not pleasing to the eye to hang too many pieces on the walls or stack them on the floor against the walls. This does not provide viewers with a visual break before they are confronted with your next work of art. A cohesive exhibition can be created using a less-is-more philosophy.

Hanging artwork is easy with these 6 tips

The art should be displayed at eye level

For hanging artwork, most art museums follow a 58-inch rule. Each piece or grouping has a center distance of 58 inches. In addition to giving your booth a professional appearance and helping the viewer move seamlessly from piece to piece, it also allows viewers to see and enjoy your art more easily.

Salon style is most desirable.

The largest piece of art should be the first to be displayed. Placing the rest of the art around the center or just off the center will please your eye. To test out ideas, cut out the shapes of each piece of art in brown craft paper. Then, tape them to the wall until you find the layout that works.

Rather than a single large piece, place dark pieces and frames in the centre.

I think frames that do not have any art in them also look gorgeous when hung in a salon style. An inexpensive custom art installation can be created by buying a bunch of frames from a thrift shop and painting them one color for a more unique look. This tip may sound a bit crazy, but it makes a clever interior trick that can be used on a spacious wall as well.

Place Pieces in a Row

Consistency is paramount. You can create a spacious feeling by placing an odd number of items straight down. This works especially well in confined spaces

Keep it simple.

It will be easiest to work with white mats and black frames since these are the most versatile colors. It would then be a wise idea to frame all of your artwork in the same way. The most effective way to liven up a neutral space is to choose frames in a variety of colors in a coordinating palette.

Defining the concept of private space

If you want to make your booth more comfortable, you may want to consider creating a reading corner or a sitting area within it. The art should be hung either at sitting eye level or lower if you are planning a room arrangement that revolves around a chair and a lamp.

Make Your Work Luminous

The number of spotlights you will have at your disposal is generally limited. Therefore, make your strategic decisions accordingly, so that your most relevant pieces will receive the highest light possible. A reliable way to spread light evenly and to get thorough coverage is to use cross-lighting

A clean, simple arrangement is the hallmark of successful booths at art shows. With this approach, it is easy to identify each piece on close inspection or as a cohesive group when viewing the works from a distance. Simplicity always lures you. There is a possibility that less might actually translate into more sales if your art is hung properly.
