5 Classic Signage from Blockbuster Halloween Movies

December 28, 2021

Halloween is a holiday that tends to get lumped into the same category as Christmas and Thanksgiving for large-scale planning and decorations. The truth is that the movie industry has played a major role in popularising this spooky time of year, beginning with the earliest horror films and extending right up through today’s blockbusters.

Some of the most famous scenes from horror flicks are set on Halloween, and some entire films occur during this spooky holiday. There’s no shortage of great signs with clever Halloween puns in these movies.

For this list, we’ve rounded up five classic signage from blockbuster Halloween movies.

Beetlejuice – The Haunted House

Beetlejuice – The Haunted House

Halloween is the one time of year when ghosts and goblins are allowed to roam free, but no film has done more to sell the idea of Halloween than Beetlejuice. Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy about a family of recently deceased people who hire a “bio-exorcist” (a type of living person) to get rid of the ghouls haunting their home is one of his most popular films.

The director wanted to show people something new and unusual that would leave an unforgettable impression. And it worked!

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is an American animated television special based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz.

The program consists of a series of vignettes; most contain songs by Marcie. Many also include flashbacks to events from earlier in the year involving the schoolchildren, emphasising character interactions rather than plot advancement. This is where you see the signage ‘Welcome Great Pumpkin’ displayed.

The program also features animated versions of Schulz’s Peanuts characters set against realistic backgrounds. Two separate holiday-themed sequences feature the main cast celebrating Halloween and Christmas.

Hubie Halloween

Hubie Halloween

In this movie, the lead role, played by Adam Sandler, is a character that doesn’t get its due credit.

Dutiful but offbeat Salem, Massachusetts, resident Hubie Dubois finds himself involved in a real-life murder case on Halloween night. Even though he has devoted himself to his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, Hubie is thought of as a figure of mockery by the townspeople. And on one such occasion, we can see Hubie on a stage with a big ‘Happy Halloween’ signage behind him.

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters is a 1984 American supernatural comedy film produced and directed by Ivan Reitman, written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis as three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City.

The first film stars Aykroyd and Ramis as Drs. Peter Venkman and Egon Spengler, Raymond Stantz played by Ernie Hudson, while Sigourney Weaver portrays Dana Barrett, her neighbour. The mayor of New York City hires the Ghostbusters to exterminate ghosts that have been menacing the city and we can see this iconic signage on the outside.

The film was a box office hit and received positive reviews from critics, but also attracted controversy over its premise and was followed by an animated TV series.

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus

Adapted from the book by William Goldman, Hocus Pocus is a 1993 American fantasy comedy film directed by Kenny Ortega and starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as witch sisters who are accidentally resurrected on Halloween and go on a killing spree to rid modern-day Salem of its inhabitants.

Tina Fey, Patricia Clarkson, and Vinessa Shaw play the role of teenagers who attempt to save their town from the witches, and Omri Katz plays Max Dennison, a teenager whose dog is also revived and helps his master fight the witches. This film has a bunch of signs — every one so individualistic to retain the essence of the movie.
